The rolling green hills, visible from every part of this charming small town, painted a serene picture that seemed to cleanse our souls.

But what about our youngest traveler? Our preschooler was having the time of her life!
She was thrilled by the simple joys Salento offered, from chasing butterflies in the Cocora Valley to savoring her favorite ice cream in the town square.
The welcoming people and the family-friendly ambiance made our trip to Salento a wonderful experience for her as well.

Best Things To Do In Salento Colombia
1. Hike The Cocora Valley
Let’s get right to the main attraction!
Our journey to the”Valle de Cocora” began at the heart of Salento, the bustling town square, where the colorful Jeep Willys awaited eager adventurers like us.
To secure our spot, we arrived at the crack of dawn, bought our tickets, and were all set for an exciting day ahead.
Alternatively, you can take a comfortable tour that includes a pickup and tour guide.
For those who prefer to travel more leisurely, taxi services are available throughout the day from Salento town to the Cocora Valley.
The journey takes approximately 30 minutes, regardless of the mode of transportation you choose.
Be sure to enjoy the breathtaking views of the rolling hills and coffee farms as you traverse the winding roads towards the Valle De Cocora.
Upon arriving, the verdant beauty of Cocora Valley unfurls itself in all its glory.
Towering wax palm trees, the national tree of Colombia and the tallest palm in the world, dot the landscape as far as the eye can see.
There are two main hiking trails to choose from: the shorter route that leads directly to the valley of the Palms and the longer circuit (which can take around 4 hours) that takes you through the cloud forest and provides stunning views of this natural landscape.
The entrance to the long trails is marked by a dirt path and an unassuming gate ready to welcome you.
However, with a 3.5 year-old, we chose to continue forward and just explore the close proximity.
We were surprised to have amazing views of the palms right away, without having to trek too far.
For those looking for picture-perfect memories, there are areas where you can pay a small fee to capture your moments against the backdrop of “Instagrammable” structures, providing a fun twist to your travel photos. We paid the nominal entrance fees to a couple of the fenced areas.
It gave our little one something to be entertained by having fun frames, wings, swings, and other such “props” on the hills to take photos with.
We were glad to have encountered this which enabled us to spend a couple of hours in the hills and not have to drag around a tired and bored child.
Of course, exploring this unique landscape can build an appetite, and the Cocora Valley has you covered.
At the entrance and along the trail, you’ll find inviting restaurants and quaint snack shops offering a range of local Colombian delicacies and international cuisines.
Plus, what’s a visit to Salento without tasting the world-famous Colombian coffee? Cafes with stunning views serve freshly brewed coffee that’s a perfect treat for any caffeine lover.

2. Horseback Riding
Salento, with its rolling hills and lush green landscapes, is a paradise best enjoyed when you’re saddled up on a horse.
And our top recommendation for families visiting Salento is just that – horseback riding! Particularly in the enchanting Cocora Valley, it adds an extra layer of adventure to your trip.
Imagine galloping through the wax palm forests, feeling the cool breeze on your face, and witnessing the breathtaking views from an entirely new perspective.
Horseback riding in the Cocora Valley is an experience like no other.
The horses are well-trained and gentle, suitable even for beginners and young riders.
There are guides available to assist you, ensuring your family’s safety and enjoyment throughout the journey. Our guide was great at helping our daughter feel at ease on her horse.
It was her first time on a horse but the guide kept her calm by handing her dandelions along the trail as he walked next to her small horse.
She was given a helmet and secured to the horse with a rope acting as a “seat belt.”
They say kids this young won’t remember anything but she always talks about her horseback riding memories!
Our horseback journey took us up and down the hills and along creeks providing the most stunning natural surroundings and views.
During our hour-long horseback riding tour, we were also given some free time to walk around and take it all in.
Aside from Cocora Valley, there are several other scenic trails for horseback riding around Salento.
One such option is the coffee farm trail, where riders can wander through vast plantations, learning about the coffee-making process right from the source.
The serene landscapes and the aroma of coffee beans in the air make this an unforgettable horseback riding adventure.
Another option is the waterfalls trail, where you and your family can enjoy a refreshing ride towards the cascading falls around Salento.
Amidst the tranquil nature, you’ll witness an array of wildlife and be able to enjoy a picnic by the waterfall.
For families with older kids seeking a bit of adrenaline, Salento even offers mountain horseback riding.
Experience the thrill of climbing steep hills and trotting down narrow paths, all while absorbing the majestic views of the region.

A trip to Salento is incomplete without visiting one of its famed coffee “fincas,” or farms, a unique experience that tops the list of things to do in this Colombian small town.
Nestled amongst the verdant rolling hills of the “Coffee Triangle”, these farms offer an intimate peek into the world of coffee production – a heritage deeply ingrained in the Colombian culture.
Our journey began early in the morning as we hopped on a Jeep Willys, which took us on a scenic drive to Finca Don Elias, one of the many coffee farms surrounding Salento.
What makes this farm stand out is the freedom they give their visitors. After the guided tour, guests are allowed to roam freely, discovering the farm’s beauty at their own pace.
Our daughter enjoyed this freedom of running around and exploring.
The hilly property of Finca Don Elias is a picturesque paradise, with a quaint river and a small waterfall adding to the serene ambiance.
Nestled amidst coffee plants, we found a variety of fruit trees – bananas, oranges, and more.
Walking through the rows of coffee trees while listening to the gentle hum of the river and the rustling leaves was an experience we cherished.
The guided coffee tour offered a comprehensive “seed to cup” overview of coffee making. Starting from the tiny coffee seeds to the lush green plants adorned with ripe, red cherries, we were walked through every step.
It wasn’t just a visual treat, but an interactive experience. If you are traveling with kids like us, this is an activity they will enjoy. Our daughter loved getting involved and working with the tools.
We had the chance to get our hands dirty – literally – and understand the labor that goes into making the beverage we all love.
The grand finale was a coffee tasting session. After learning about the process, it was time to taste the fruits of our labor. The flavors were robust and authentic, unlike any coffee we’d tasted before.
Needless to say, we couldn’t resist taking a bag of beans home, a perfect souvenir to remind us of our extraordinary journey through Colombia’s coffee heartland.

4. Climb Up to The Mirador
Tucked away at the end of Salento’s Calle Real (Carrera 6), a vibrant street lined with colorful buildings, lies a stairway to one of the town’s most enchanting destinations – the Mirador Alto de La Cruz.
As you ascend the 250 brightly painted steps, your efforts are rewarded with increasingly breathtaking views of the lush, green coffee plantations and the rolling hills of the Cocora Valley.
There are two ways to reach this captivating viewpoint:
- One option is to walk up Carrera 4, leading you to the Mirador de Salento. This viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the quaint town below and the lush landscapes surrounding it. From there, a short, scenic walk takes you to the Mirador Alto de La Cruz.
- The other route is to head directly up Calle Real. The viewpoints are connected, so you can easily experience both during your visit.
Both viewpoints are excellent spots to take a breather and soak in the magnificent vistas.
A few local bars sell drinks at the viewpoints, allowing you to enjoy a refreshing beverage while admiring the stunning views.

As you amble down this lively street, you’re welcomed by the colorful facades of the buildings, and the delightful aroma of traditional Colombian cuisine wafting through the air from the numerous local eateries.

6. Plaza De Bolivar
At the heart of Salento lies the Plaza de Bolívar, a vibrant square that serves as the town’s epicenter of activity.
Dominated by the iconic Iglesia Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen, the main square is a hub of commercial and social interaction, effortlessly capturing the essence of local life.
The impressive Iglesia Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen, with its bright facade and striking architectural details, is a prominent landmark.
An oasis of tranquility amidst the town’s hustle and bustle, the church invited us to step in, admire its interior, and absorb a moment of peace.
Flanking the plaza are several conveniences that make this main square the town’s operational center.
ATMs are readily available for those needing to withdraw cash, and a well-stocked grocery store provides all the essentials you may need during your stay.

7. Day Trip To Filandia
One of our absolute must-dos while in Salento was to take a day trip to the neighboring town of Filandia, and it did not disappoint.
Often described as a scaled-down version of Salento, Filandia exudes an old-world charm with its vibrantly painted buildings and a delightful church, all neatly arranged around the town square.
Our first stop was the town’s Mirador, a unique structure perched atop a hill, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the town and the lush green hills stretching into the horizon.
Climbing to the top of the Mirador and taking in the awe-inspiring scenery was an experience we will never forget.
Our preschooler absolutely loved the playground at the base of the Mirador, offering us a fun-filled respite after the climb.
We also had a blast taking family photos with the Jeep Willys model.
Come lunchtime, we headed to “La Casa Rosada”, more popularly known as Helena Adentro.
The pink façade of this fusion restaurant made a striking contrast against the town’s traditional buildings.
It wasn’t just the eye-catching décor that impressed us, the menu was a delightful mix of traditional Colombian and international cuisines.
Set against the backdrop of stunning views of the town, our lunch here was a culinary adventure we still talk about.
Our day in Filandia wouldn’t have been complete without a visit to Mocafe. Nestled in a corner of the town, this quaint café was a sanctuary for coffee lovers like us.
Their Colombian coffee was rich and full-bodied, just the perfect way to end our day trip.
All in all, our day trip to Filandia from Salento was filled with charming discoveries, unforgettable culinary experiences, and simple pleasures.
From the quaint charm of the town to the stunning views from the Mirador, Filandia offered a delightful escape from the usual tourist trail, something we would highly recommend to anyone visiting this part of Colombia.
8. Try New Foods And Snacks
One of the highlights of our trip to Salento was undoubtedly the food. We delighted in trying local delicacies and snacks, each offering a unique taste of Colombian culture.
After spending a day exploring the Cocora Valley, we found ourselves at a charming local eatery – Restaurante Aires De Cocora.
Here, we tried the renowned Trucha, a traditional dish made with fresh trout. This dish, presented beautifully with a flavorful array of sides, was as visually appealing as it was delicious.
The fish was cooked to perfection, flaky and rich in taste. Each bite reminded us of why Trucha is a must-have when visiting Salento.
Right next door to the restaurant was Guanabana Juice, a little gem we stumbled upon. Here, we decided to try the Soursop fruit in a cup, a local favorite.
The Soursop, or Guanabana as it’s known in Spanish, was a pleasant surprise. The fruit was deliciously tangy, sweet, and had a refreshing, creamy texture.
Served chilled in a cup, it was the perfect refresher after our hearty lunch.
Back in town on Calle Real, we found ourselves drawn to a snack shop selling Obleas. Having never tried these before, we were intrigued.
Upon tasting, we were instantly reminded of the Stroopwaffles we had when visiting Amsterdam. The Obleas were thin, crisp wafers sandwiching a sweet filling.
The delightful crunch followed by the burst of sweet flavor made for a fantastic treat, and we found ourselves going back for more.
Our culinary journey through Salento was one of discovery and delight, offering us a taste of their local food scene.
From the savory Trucha to the refreshing Soursop and the sweet Obleas, our taste buds were on a Colombian adventure as enriching as our travels.
9. Los Nevados National Park
Just a stone’s throw away from Salento, the Los Nevados National Park is an unmissable destination for the adventurous traveler.
This sprawling natural wonderland is home to a collection of active and dormant volcanoes, glacial lakes, and unique flora and fauna.
The park offers challenging yet rewarding hikes that take you through diverse landscapes and altitudes, promising awe-inspiring panoramic views at each turn.
Visitors can access the park through guided tours, which are highly recommended due to the park’s vastness and altitude changes.
These tours are often multi-day treks, which include camping in the park, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in this natural spectacle.

One of the hidden gems we discovered in Salento was the Santa Rita waterfall. Nestled amidst lush greenery, this waterfall is a delightful spot for those who love nature and tranquillity.
Ever since we visited Krka and Plitvice waterfalls in Croatia, we have made it a mission to seek out waterfalls wherever we visit.
The best way to reach Santa Rita is by renting a bike or hiring a taxi from Salento town, followed by a short but picturesque hike.
The journey offers a scenic ride through verdant landscapes and local farms, which in itself is a charming experience. You can also choose to get a guided tour to take you there.
Once there, the sight of the cascading water against a backdrop of towering green trees is truly awe-inspiring.
Whether you choose to take a refreshing dip in the cool waters, have a picnic, or simply take in the calming sounds of the waterfall, a visit to Santa Rita adds a unique and serene experience to your Salento itinerary.
Bonus Things To Do In Salento
For Kids: Ride On A One Of The Little Jeep Willys
One unique and delightful experience we discovered for our preschooler in Salento was the opportunity to ride in a mini Willy Jeep.
Right in the bustling town square, these little Willys, reminiscent of the real jeeps that are an integral part of Salento’s transportation, offer an adorable way for kids to join in on the fun.
Each ride, taking a lap around the square, is pushed by a friendly local and costs roughly one US dollar.
We found it to be a fantastic way to keep our little one entertained while we enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere of the square.
In fact, our daughter loved it so much that she took multiple rides every single day of our stay.
Watching her laughter and joy as she zoomed around the square in her mini Willy Jeep is a cherished memory from our Salento trip.
For Parents: Get A Massage
While Salento offers a plethora of outdoor activities and adventures, we found that taking some time to relax and rejuvenate was an equally rewarding experience.
After a day full of hiking and exploration, nothing quite compares to the soothing experience of a great massage.
This might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a Colombian mountain town, but trust us when we say that it’s worth indulging in.
The tranquil setting, coupled with the skilled touch of the therapists, melted away the fatigue, leaving us refreshed and ready for the next day’s adventures.
We found this aspect of self-care a perfect addition to our Salento itinerary, providing a balance to the thrill of our outdoor excursions.
We went to a place a few blocks away from the town square down Calle Real called Vital Spa and really loved the experience.
How To Get To & Around Salento
Once you land at Pereira’s Matecaña International Airport, there are several ways to reach Salento, each offering a unique travel experience.
The most convenient option, and the one we opted for, is to take private transportation directly from the airport. Although this is the most expensive option, it provides a stress-free, direct journey to your destination.
Another option is to take a bus or a Colectivo (shared taxi), which are more affordable and give you a more local experience.
To do so, you’ll need to catch a taxi from the airport to Pereira’s central bus station, and from there, buses or colectivos frequently depart for Salento.
A third option is to rent a car, offering the most flexibility to explore the region at your own pace.
However, do keep in mind that Colombian country roads can be a bit challenging for those unfamiliar with the terrain.
Regardless of your choice, each journey offers its own unique view of the stunning landscapes surrounding Salento.
How do you get around in Salento? Once you are in Salento exploring the town is easy by foot and for anything further, a Willy ride is the one most people pick.
Jeep Willy Ride: Known as the workhorses of Colombia, these classic vehicles, originally made for the US Army, have been ferrying locals and tourists through the region’s hilly terrain for decades.
The jeeps leave regularly from the Salento town center, with the first one heading out early in the morning.
Where To Stay In Salento
When it comes to accommodations in Salento, rest assured that its compact size means wherever you choose to stay, you’ll be within walking distance of the town center and its bustling shopping and dining scene.
During our visit, we chose a hotel located directly on Calle Real, the town’s main street.
Staying here placed us right in the middle of the lively atmosphere, with artisanal shops, cafes, and restaurants just steps from our door.
We thoroughly enjoyed being in the heart of the action. However, we noticed that the weekends on Calle Real can get a bit lively and loud.
So, for visitors who prefer a quieter ambiance for their stay, we recommend choosing accommodations located a little farther from the main street.
Despite the noise, we found the convenience and vibrancy of our location on Calle Real added an extra layer of enjoyment to our Salento experience.

Salento enjoys a mild, temperate climate year-round, with average temperatures ranging from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius.
However, the town sees most of its rainfall between April and July, and then again from September to November.
Our visit was in May and we didn’t experience any rain during our 3 days there.
If you’re planning outdoor activities like hiking in the Cocora Valley, you might prefer the drier months to avoid muddy trails. That said, the verdant beauty of the region truly comes alive during the rainy season, which some might find particularly appealing.
In terms of visitor patterns, keep in mind that Salento tends to become crowded on the weekends, as locals from the nearby cities flock to this charming town for a respite.
We noticed that the town’s ambiance shifts noticeably during this time, bustling with more activity and vibrancy.
If you prefer a quieter, more relaxed experience, you might want to plan your visit during the weekdays.
As for the best times of the year, January to March and December are considered ideal, as these months offer the perfect combination of pleasant weather and fewer crowds.
