The journey to the top of El Peñol is a climb of 740 steps, snaking their way up through a crack in the rock.
The vertical marathon on these famous stairs might sound daunting, but it’s an achievable and rewarding challenge for individuals of all fitness levels.
We were pleasantly surprised that our 3.5 year old daughter made it up most of the way herself! She was also able to come down all of the steps on her own on the way back.
Along the way, you’ll find numerous platforms offering scenic pit stops, perfect for catching your breath (I needed to catch my breath several times!) while the stunning panorama unfolds beneath your feet.

Some key points:
- Go early! We suggest being at the ticket booth right when they open. If you decide to go up after 10am you will be disappointed with the traffic on the stairs. The summit viewpoint is also not a very large space and will get super packed! We were able to take some great photos since we had it all to ourselves!
- Don’t rely on seeing views on the way down. The stairs that are for going down are separate to those going up. Since they are located behind the other set of stairs, you will not have the same views.
- There are some restaurants right at the base of the monolith that offer great views for those who have worked up an appetite and want to linger with the scenery longer.
2. Walk Down The Colorful Remembrance Lane
Calle del Recuerdo, or Street of Remembrance, was constructed in Guatapé as a living testament to the town’s resilience and cultural richness.
This special street was built following a significant fire in 2001 that destroyed many original structures.

We loved staying at Hotel Zocalo Campestre which was located on the hillside right at the base of El Peñol. It provided us with the tranquility that we wanted as well as stunning views.
The staff were extremely hospitable and helped us arrange tours and transportation. We loved the breakfast and being able to dine at their restaurant.
The tuk tuk ride to the town center was only about 10 minutes and did not cause any inconvenience for us.
